Meditation on the Word of God

I have often thought about meditation on the word of God. What does it mean to me? For a person to take delight in the things of God, one must seek to an ever expanding and increasing knowledge of Him who sits on the throne in Heaven. Notice from this verse in the Psalms that it is both a delight and done more than once a day.

Psalms 1:2 (NASB)
[2] But his delight is in the law of the LORD,
And in His law he meditates day and night.

If it were really a delight you would be constantly thinking about it and wanting to get back into it. So this verse is really an offshoot of an internal desire to be in the word of God. It is really an internal desire to get back into it as much as possible. When we meditate on the word of God what are we meditating about? Well the first thing is we meditate on who God really is. We do this during the times in the day when our thoughts go back to Him. This could be anytime during the day, especially at night when the cares of the day are behind us and our thoughts drift to things we are interested in.

Psalms 63:6 (NASB)
[6] When I remember You on my bed,
I meditate on You in the night watches,

It turns out to not be just meditating on the Lord, but also on his deeds. What has He done? When you get into the Word of God you discover how incredible the Lord really is and how much He has accomplished for us. And that is a good way to look at it because God is Great and there is no one like Him.

Psalms 77:12-13 (NASB)
[12] I will meditate on all Your work
And muse on Your deeds.
[13] Your way, O God, is holy;
What god is great like our God?

Not only do we meditate on what God has done, but also we meditate on what He has done in the past. Both in terms of the scriptures and also what has been done in our lives. It is interesting to note that we are called to be witnesses. You aren't a witness if you haven't witnessed anything. In this case, what has the Lord done in our lives and in the lives of those that we know.

Psalms 143:5 (NASB)
[5] I remember the days of old;
I meditate on all Your doings;
I muse on the work of Your hands.

It is interesting to note that Joshua was commanded of the Lord to meditate on the word. The reason? In order to be careful to do what it commanded. The result? That he would be prosperous in everything he did.

Joshua 1:8-9 (NASB)
[8] “This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may *be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will *have success. [9] “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

This whole thing reminds me that I am finite and God is infinite. His way is good, my way, not so good. He provides the way and the path, I cannot do anything from myself but I become dependent on Him. He strengthens me when I am down and lifts me up to do great things for Him. How can I not meditate on Him?
