But isn’t that women’s work?
I have started realizing that my wife does a lot of the chores around the house. She retired probably nine months before I did. One of the things that I have decided to do is to try and help her as much as I can. I’ve started to clean up after each meal scraping the dishes getting them into the dishwasher and generally putting things away where they’re supposed to go so that my wife doesn’t have to worry about that. That way she can sit and watch television as she’s very prone to do.
I have even contemplated maybe taking some classes at the local high school in order to learn how to cook a little bit; maybe just some general concepts and things. As long as I am able to help my wife in the chore of cooking I think that will relieve a little bit of pressure off of her and perhaps in the meantime pay her back from for many of the times that she has cooked for the family when she is tired from a long day at work. I am not saying that I will be a good cook but at least I can do some of the more mundane things and perhaps help her at different times to complete a meal so that she’s not stuck doing the entire thing. One possibility that I have done ever since we moved up into this area was to occasionally cook on the grill which becomes a way of my paying her back for all the times that she has supported me. I am hoping that this is going to be a good thing, and I think that I will learn to enjoy this during retirement.
