(2) Knowledge, Understanding, and Wisdom
Knowledge is the facts
Information – Memory
Those with knowledge are able to collect, remember, and access information
Understanding is the ability to lift the meaning out of the facts
Principles – Reason
Those with understanding are able to abstract the meaning out of information
Wisdom is knowing what to do next
Application – Action
Those with wisdom know which principle to apply now
Pr 1:7 – The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; Fools despise wisdom and instruction
Pr 9:10 – The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding
(3) Where Do We Get Wisdom?
Pr 2:6-7 – For the Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding. He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk in integrity
Ps 111:10 – The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; a good understanding have all those who do His commandments
1 Cor 1:18-24 - … Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God …
James 1:5 – But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him
(4) What If I Don't Reach Out For Wisdom?
Pr 1:20-29 - 20 Wisdom shouts in the street, She lifts her voice in the square ; 21 At the head of the noisy streets she cries out; At the entrance of the gates in the city she utters her sayings : 22 "How long , O naive ones, will you love being simple-minded ? And scoffers delight themselves in scoffing And fools hate knowledge ? 23 "Turn to my reproof, Behold, I will pour out my spirit on you; I will make my words known to you. 24 "Because I called and you refused, I stretched out my hand and no one paid attention ; 25 And you neglected all my counsel And did not want my reproof ; 26 I will also laugh at your calamity ; I will mock when your dread comes, 27 When your dread comes like a storm And your calamity comes like a whirlwind, When distress and anguish come upon you. 28 "Then they will call on me, but I will not answer ; They will seek me diligently but they will not find me, 29 Because they hated knowledge And did not choose the fear of the LORD.
Pr 2:1-9 - [2:1] My son, if you will receive my words
And treasure my commandments within you,
[2] Make your ear attentive to wisdom,
Incline your heart to understanding;
[3] For if you cry for discernment,
*Lift your voice for understanding;
[4] If you seek her as silver
And search for her as for hidden treasures;
[5] Then you will discern the fear of the LORD
And discover the knowledge of God.
[6] For the LORD gives wisdom;
From His mouth come knowledge and understanding.
[7] He stores up sound wisdom for the upright;
He is a shield to those who walk in integrity,
[8] Guarding the paths of justice,
And He preserves the way of His godly ones.
[9] Then you will discern righteousness and justice
And equity and every good course.
Heb 5:12-14 - 12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you have need again for someone to teach you the elementary principles of the oracles of God, and you have come to need milk and not solid food. 13 For everyone who partakes only of milk is not accustomed to the word of righteousness, for he is an infant. 14 But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to discern good and evil.
